UNESCO has awarded its world press freedom prize to Palestinian journalists covering the Gaza war, expressing solidarity and recognition for their work in challenging circumstances.

The UN's director general, Audrey Azoulay, praised journalists for their courage and commitment to freedom of expression, highlighting the tragic loss of 97 press members, 92 of whom were Palestinians, since the war began.

The war began with Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel, resulting in 1,170 deaths, 129 captives, and 34,596 deaths in Gaza, primarily women and children, according to Israel's health ministry.
