As Allah has reminded us in these potent verses, let us consider the value of kindness and humility this week.

Allah says:

"And do not walk upon the earth with exultance; indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height."
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:37).

Allah reminds us of our limitations in this verse. Regardless of our level of success, wealth, or power, we are still Allah's servants living on His planet. Being arrogant won't make us better or stronger. Rather, it separates us from Allah's preferred humility.

Additionally, the tale of Qarun serves as a sobering reminder of the perils of arrogance:

"Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Musa, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men. His people said to him, 'Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.'"
(Surah Al-Qasas, 28:76)

Qarun was extremely wealthy, but his arrogance caused him to lose sight of the fact that Allah was the source of his blessings. We run the risk of becoming like Qarun when we despise other people or take pride in our accomplishments, failing to remember that Allah can take as easily as He gives. Let this serve as a reminder that humility and thankfulness, not wealth or prestige, are the true markers of honor.

Allah also issues the following warning:
"And do not turn your cheek in contempt toward people, and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful."
(Surah Luqman, 31:18)

How we treat other people is a reflection of who we really are. Allah disapproves of actions that turn people away, treat them with contempt, or brag about our achievements. Since everyone is equal in Allah's eyes, we are reminded to treat each other with kindness, gentleness, and humility.

Since Allah is the source of everything we own, let's pledge to treat everyone with dignity and compassion today. Let's remember that pride can be a dangerous path, speak kindly, and walk with humility.

May Allah protect us from the conceit that misleads us and give us the humility of the righteous. Ameen.
